Born in 1967 in Yamagata, Japan, Hiroyuki Yamamoto studied composition in Tokyo University of Arts with Jo Kondo and Isao Matsusita. After his graduation in 1990, he continued to the graduate school of the same university and completed his studies in 1992.
He is the winner of several competitions, including the third prize of the 58th Japan Music Competition in 1989, the competition by Musica Practica in 1991 on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, and the prize of the 13th Competition of Japanese Society for Contemporary Music in 1996. He was also invited as the guest composer to Forum 91 in 1991 that was held by the University of Montréal.
In 1994, his piece was selected by the International Gaudeamus Music Week ’94. In 1998, he won the third prize of BMW Musica Viva Competition Prize and the selected orchestral piece was performed by Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2000. Furthermore, he won the first prize of Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2002 and also the 13th Akutagawa Composition Prize in 2003 by his recent orchestral piece.
He is the Associate Professor of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. Some of his pieces are published from M.A.P. Editions (milan). http://japanesecomposers.info

1967年生まれ。1992年東京芸術大学大学院作曲専攻修了。在学中、作曲を近藤讓、松下功の両氏に師事。これまでに第58回日本音楽コンクール第3位(1989)、BMW musica viva作曲賞第3位(ドイツ/1998)、武満徹作曲賞第1位(2002)、第13回芥川作曲賞(2003)を受賞。作品はEnsemble Contemporain de Montréal(モントリオール)、Nieuw Ensemble(アムステルダム)、バイエルン放送交響楽団(ミュンヘン)、東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団など、国内外の演奏団体等により演奏されている。1990年より作曲家集団《TEMPUS NOVUM》に参加、2002年よりピアニスト中村和枝氏とのコラボレーション《claviarea》を行うなど、様々な活動を展開している。現在、愛知県立芸術大学准教授、Ensemble Contemporary αメンバー。いくつかの作品はM.A.P.
